THE CHANGING DYNAMICS: THE DEMISE OF TARUN GOGOI

The entire state of Assam was in a state of shock after hearing the demise of Assam’s dynamic former chief minister, Tarun Gogoi. The veteran Congress stalwart passed away at around 5.34 pm in Guwahati (Assam) on Monday (November 23). He was 86 and was battling for his life with post-COVID complications. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 in the month of August.

Gogoi, the three-time chief minister of Assam, had a prolific political career spanning over 50 years. During those 50 years, he held various positions within the Congress party, the Central government, and also in the state of Assam.

It is pertinent to mention here that before being diagnosed with COVID-19, he was at the helm of the affairs related to the formation of a ‘grand alliance’, consisting of all the opposition parties, for the 2021 Assam Assembly elections. Gogoi holds the record of leading the Congress to three consecutive electoral victories in 2001, 2006, and 2011. It is indeed a commendable feat. In fact, he was the longest-serving chief minister of Assam. Tarun Gogoi was loved by all. Leaders across the political spectrum shed tears on his demise. He was also a six-time parliamentarian and twice served as Union minister.

Tarun Gogoi can be credited for changing Assam, slowly but surely. He addressed the nagging issue of militancy in Assam.
